From July 24 to 26, Snuneymuxw Days returns for another unforgettable weekend of community, sport, and celebration.

A long-standing tradition for Coast Salish Nations, Snuneymuxw Days brings together participants and spectators from across the region while offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the hospitality of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, celebrate enduring cultural traditions, and witness some fierce competition along the way.

What’s Happening July 24-26?

Festivities begin Friday with the highly anticipated War Canoe Races at The Point (Needham Street and Shoreline Drive). Watch paddlers showcase their strength, teamwork, and skill as they compete on the water in one of the event’s most exciting traditions. Races will continue throughout the weekend, so remember to stop by and watch teams of all ages compete.

Following the races on Friday, July 24, community members and guests are invited to the Snuneymuxw Longhouse for a special Feast and Jam Session. Bring your drum, your songs, and your family!

The excitement continues throughout the weekend with a full lineup of activities. Browse the Snuneymuxw Days Marketplace, featuring local artists, makers, and vendors offering handcrafted goods, artwork, and unique treasures. Cheer on competitors at the event’s Basketball Tournament and, new this year, the Soccer Tournament at various locations around Snuneymuxw territory.

Families can enjoy the Kids Zone on Saturday, complete with face painting, inflatable activities, and nearby food trucks serving up delicious local fare.

Snuneymuxw’s Island Brave Team in Attendance

While you’re there, keep an eye out for Snuneymuxw’s Island Brave team, who represented Team Canada at the International Va’a Federation World Distance Championships in Brazil last year. This October, they’ll travel to Hawaii to compete in the Molokaʻi Hoe World Championships, making Snuneymuxw Days a great opportunity to see them in action before they head to the world stage. Pro tip: Bring a chair for an extra cozy canoe race-watching experience.

Will We See You There?

Tourism Nanaimo is honoured to support Snuneymuxw First Nation in sharing this important event with the broader community. See you at Snuneymuxw Days! Everyone is invited. Come as you are. You’ll fit right in.
