No visit to Nanaimo is complete without tasting the city’s most famous creation. The Nanaimo Bar Trail is a self-guided, sugar-fuelled adventure through cafés, bakeries, restaurants, breweries, and boutiques—each offering their own take on this iconic no-bake dessert. 

The story begins in 1952, when the earliest printed recipe appeared in a local hospital auxiliary cookbook. In 1985, a city-wide contest crowned Joyce Hardcastle’s version the “official” recipe, and the rest is sweet history. Today, that classic trio of chocolate, custard, and coconut still anchors the experience but along the trail, creativity takes over. 

You’ll find traditional squares served just the way locals remember them, alongside gluten-free, vegan, nut-free, and dairy-free options so everyone can indulge. Beyond the classic, expect bold interpretations: Nanaimo Bar cheesecake, cupcakes, layered cakes, French macarons, waffles piled high with fixings, creamy gelato, milkshakes, fudge, and even spring rolls. 

Prefer your dessert in a glass? Several local spots craft Nanaimo Bar-inspired cocktails, martinis, porters, and specialty lattes that transform the beloved flavours into sippable form. It’s indulgent, unexpected, and unapologetically fun. 

The trail doesn’t stop at edible creations. Discover Nanaimo Bar-themed soaps, jewellery, apparel, tea towels, and even a themed pedicure. At the museum, you can dive into the dessert’s history and see how this humble square became a Canadian icon. 

With more than 30 stops to choose from, you can map out your own tasting route—downtown, in the Old City Quarter, north Nanaimo, or even across the water on Gabriola Island.
