Two Days Exploring Nanaimo’s Waterfront
Nanaimo’s waterfront isn’t exactly hidden, it just doesn’t feel the need to show off about it. But give it a few hours (or better yet, a couple of days), and it’ll quietly prove its point.
Whether you’re coming from the harbour, your hotel, or wandering down from Commercial Street, you’re never far from the water. And once you’re there, it’s very easy to keep going.
From the Harbourfront Walkway to local shops, cafés, and ocean views, there’s no shortage of things to do along the Nanaimo waterfront. No complicated planning. No rigid itinerary. Just follow what looks good and see where you end up.
Here’s how to spend a couple of days doing exactly that.
Day 1
Morning
Let’s start with the obvious: a morning caffeine boost.
Head to Javawocky Coffee House and order whatever fits the mood. Coffee, matcha, tea, something snacky if you’re feeling ambitious. Stay a while or take it to-go. No wrong moves here.
Once you’re caffeinated, make your way along the Cameron Island Walkway. It’s an easy loop (read: minimal effort, maximum payoff) with views out toward Protection Island, Gabriola Island, and Saysutshun (Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park) in the distance.
You’ll get a front-row look at Nanaimo’s Inner Harbour, plus a few public art moments along the way. Just enough to slow you down without trying too hard.
Afternoon
By now, you’ve earned something a little more substantial.
Head to Lighthouse Bistro & Pub for lunch and a drink. It’s classic waterfront dining with boats coming and going, a bit of harbour buzz, and a view that does most of the heavy lifting. Feeling refreshed? Good. Don’t stop yet.
Hop on the passenger ferry to Protection Island (it’s about 10–15 minutes). What you’ll find is a quieter, slower-paced island, no rush, no noise, no vehicles. Just space to wander.
Do the 4 km loop, pop into the Protection Island Museum, or drift between beach parks along the shoreline.
It’s the kind of detour you didn’t plan for, but won’t regret.
Evening
While you’re on Protection Island, you might as well go all in.
Make your way to the Dinghy Dock Pub, Canada’s only registered floating pub (yes, actually floating). It’s the kind of place you don’t really plan for, but end up talking about later.
Order the fish and chips, try the salmon burger, grab a drink, and settle in for a bit. Boats drift by, the water does its thing, and suddenly you’re in no rush to be anywhere else. It’s casual, it’s a little quirky, and it works.
Once you’ve had your fill, and maybe stayed a touch longer than intended, hop the ferry back to Nanaimo.
Call it a successful day. Or, if you’re feeling ambitious, just a very solid start.
Day 2
Morning
Day 2 of the Nanaimo Waterfront! Let’s change things up with a morning tea at Tea on the Quay!
Once you’ve had your tea, spend some time exploring the harbour. Wander down near the boats, watch for wildlife (the river otters love to play on the docks and boats!), and explore some of the shops along the Waterfront Walkway, like Newfoundland to Nanaimo.
Afternoon
Next up, it’s time to stretch your legs.
Follow the Harbourfront Walkway over to Maffeo Sutton Park, one of those spots that’s always got a little something going on. Let the kids (or your inner child, no judgment) loose at the inclusive playground, or slow things down by the Sway-a-Lana Lagoon and nearby swimming beach (no lifeguards on duty, so plan accordingly).
Feel like wandering? Take yourself on a self-guided public art tour! You’ll spot pieces tucked throughout the park if you’re paying attention.
And if hunger hits (it will), follow your nose to the plaza. There’s usually a lineup of food trucks doing their thing. It’s easy, it’s casual, and it’s exactly what you’re in the mood for, even if you didn’t know it yet.
Evening
After a full day of wandering, snacking, and “just one more stop,” it’s officially time for dinner. And yes, we’re keeping you right on the water. Because at this point, why would you leave?
Craving something a little bold? Penny’s Palapa has you covered with tacos, margaritas, and nachos that don’t mess around. It’s colourful, lively, and exactly the kind of place you settle into for longer than planned.
More of a stick-with-the-classics situation? Head to Trollers Fish & Chips and keep the fish and chips streak alive. We’re talking chowder, cod, halibut, salmon, the full West Coast lineup, served up right on the water.
Easy choice, really. You just have to decide what you’re in the mood for.
Meet You Back at the Waterfront
Two days in, and it probably feels pretty clear, this isn’t just a place you pass through.
The Nanaimo waterfront has a way of pulling you in slowly. A walk turns into a stop, a stop turns into a meal, and suddenly the day’s gone in the best possible way.
Maybe you checked a few things off your list. Maybe you didn’t. Either way, you saw a different side of Nanaimo, the one that doesn’t rush, doesn’t overcomplicate things, and doesn’t need to try too hard to be worth your time.
So take one more walk before you go. Grab one last coffee. Pick up something small to remember it by. And if you’re already thinking about coming back? Yeah… that tends to happen.
