Summer’s not done yet, and neither are beach days. Explore the tidal pools, wander the coast, or squeeze in a few rounds of bocce on the beach. These local spots are prime for making the most of every last bit of summer.

Whether you do this guide in one day or one week, we have all the best spots ready for you in one place!

Ready, Set, Beach!

Get started in the North End of Nanaimo at Blueback Beach. This beach is known for its beautiful sandy beaches that come out when the tide is low. This beach stretches from Dover to Lantzville, meaning you could spend hours walking… seriously, hours! A great morning walk where you can spot plenty of shells, sea dollars, and clams! The access point to this beach is a flight of stairs… like around 300 stairs… which makes for a great workout!

Next, Sunset Beach! Accessible through Neck Point Park's parking lot, following the path will lead you to a secluded beach. While gorgeous at sunset, this beach can be experienced whenever you want, and it is always worth it! This beach makes for great swimming and snorkelling as you swim amongst the fish and rocky shoreline! With easy access to parking, this rocky beach is great for picnics!

Right next door, we have Neck Point Park. Accessible from the same parking lot with restrooms onsite, this is a local favourite for midday strolls. Going scuba diving? Make sure to bring a camera, as this area is reportedly home to a friendly octopus!

Note: While this octopus may be friendly, it is illegal to touch or otherwise disturb any wildlife. Should any wildlife appear to be in distress, you are legally required to back away.

As we move further into the core of Nanaimo, you might be getting a bit hungry; we recommend visiting The Pipers Restaurant for brunch, lunch, or dinner! 

Splish Splash We’re Having a Blast!

Nanaimo’s beaches aren’t just for hanging out on shore; sometimes you have to get in the water! From a refreshing swim to paddling along the coastline or simply dipping your toes in, there are plenty of ways to make the most of a late-summer day by the sea.

Head over to Pipers Lagoon for scenic trails, bring a kayak or paddle board, and enjoy paddling in the Lagoon! This beach is great for getting the chance to view marine life and do some bird watching!

Looking for some ocean swimming? Make your way over to Departure Bay Beach, maybe pick up a coffee at Drip Coffee Social on your way! This beach has a protected swim area and a dock you can swim to! 

Rather do some lake swimming? Head on up to Westwood Lake for sandy beaches, a swimming dock, and access to paddleboard rentals! Need a quick bite to eat? Visit the Westwood Lake concession stand and the general store for snacks and handhelds!

Right in the heart of downtown Nanaimo, you have swimming access at the Swy-A-Lana Lagoon! With a sandy beach, stunning ocean views, and a playground, you get all the fun with the convenience of being downtown!

Beaches Off the Island

Got extra time and want to explore some beaches right off of Nanaimo? Take a quick ferry over to Saysutshun for sandy beaches, great swimming, and access to paddleboards and kayaks! The best part is that if you get hungry, the Saysutshun Concession Stand is right around the corner!

Looking to spend a whole day exploring new beaches? Take a ferry over to Gabriola Island for beaches with incredible rock formations! Gabriola Sands Beach is known for its sandy beaches (hence the name!), crystal clear waters, and being a great location for a picnic! Don’t forget to explore the coastline of this beach as there are some seriously cool sandstone formations!

Looking for a hidden gem? Check out Whale Bone Beach. While not as popular as Gabriola Sand Beach, this sandy beach is in a secluded bay with beautiful mountain and ocean views!
