Get in, friends. We're going shopping.
Grab your crew, clear some trunk space, and prepare to “just pop into one store” about 17 times.
If you’ve spent any time scrolling our socials, you already know this: Nanaimo and the surrounding region seriously know how to shop. We’re talking handcrafted goods, vintage treasures, local boutiques, coastal-inspired finds, artisan markets, quirky little stores you accidentally spend an hour in, and the kind of purchases that somehow end up becoming your whole personality for the next six months.
This isn’t your average mall crawl. Around here, shopping comes with ocean views, walkable neighbourhoods, coffee breaks that turn into patio stops, and enough hidden gems to keep your group saying, “Wait… one more store.”
To help get you started, we’ve pulled together a two-day shopping itinerary featuring some of Nanaimo’s most-loved shopping districts, local favourites, and can’t-miss stops along the way. And trust us, this is only scratching the surface. Half the fun is wandering into the spots you weren’t planning to find in the first place.
So take your time, explore a little longer than you meant to, and maybe leave a bit of extra room in your suitcase. You’re probably going to need it.
Day 1
Morning
We hope you brought your reusable bags and a little self-control… because today’s shopping lineup is stacked.
First stop: Commercial Street. Right in the heart of Downtown Nanaimo, this stretch is packed with local boutiques, vintage gems, record shops, art spaces, and spots that somehow convince you that yes, you do need another jacket, candle, print, plant, or pair of earrings.
But shopping here isn’t just about what you buy. Commercial Street brings together Nanaimo’s arts, culture, food, and local business scene all in one walkable downtown core. Grab a coffee, wander a little slower, duck into stores that catch your eye, and don’t be surprised if your “quick stop” turns into an all-day affair.
Here are a few spots worth adding to your must-visit list:
- Lucid
- Primary Skateboards
- Rumours Vintage
- Lucky Cloud Vintage
- Archer + Arrow
- Local by Lucid
- Funk Revival
- Quintessential
- Flying Fish
- NYLA Fresh Thread
- London Coast Fashions
- Artzi Stuff
- NoiseAgonyMayhem
- Fascinating Rhythm
- Red Shelf Decor
And honestly? That’s still only scratching the surface. There are plenty more unique shops off Commercial Street that are begging to be explored and Downtown Nanaimo has them all listed here.
Afternoon
Keep wandering down Commercial Street and you’ll eventually land at Victoria Crescent, a little pocket of downtown Nanaimo that leans fully into its artsy, eclectic, slightly chaotic-in-the-best-way energy.
This is where local makers, vintage hunters, artists, skaters, cyclists, and creative types all seem to collide. One minute you’re flipping through vinyl, the next you’re leaving with handmade jewellery, a screen-printed tee, and a very convincing explanation for why you absolutely needed all three.
Victoria Crescent has a personality all its own, and honestly? We’re into it.
Here are just a few spots worth popping into while you’re there:
- A.Seng & Co. Vintage Studio
- Sound Heritage
- Crush on Velvet
- UFF Screen Printing
- Wyrd Wealth
- ZAP! Nanaimo
- Blackbird Jewellers
- Hub City Cycle Community Co-op
- Vault Skateboards/Coal Town 1868 Vintage Clothing
Once you’ve officially run out of arm strength from carrying shopping bags, head uphill to the Old City Quarter. And yes, the climb is worth it.
Packed with heritage buildings, brick storefronts, and enough charm to make you consider “opening a little bookstore café someday,” the Old City Quarter feels like its own little world tucked just above downtown. It’s slower-paced, wildly photogenic, and filled with independently owned shops you’ll want to wander through one by one.
Keep an eye out for:
- Black Pearl Vintage
- Crispin Shoe Store
- Damsels Fashions
- Going Good Vintage
- Hoxton Home
- Lobelia’s Lair
- Mad About Ewe
- Old City Panache
- Peacock Jewellers Studio
- This & That: Home, Apparel, Apothecary
- Windowseat Books
- Yours & Mine Consignment
Take your time with this neighbourhood. Grab a coffee, wander into stores you weren’t planning on visiting, and accept the fact that your “I’m just browsing” era probably ended hours ago.
Evening
We firmly believe every good shopping day should end by the ocean, preferably with sore feet, a full trunk, and absolutely zero regrets about that “one last store.”
So naturally, your next stop is the Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway.
Stretching along the waterfront in the heart of downtown, this scenic path is the perfect place to slow things down after a full day of shopping bags. Grab a well-earned dinner overlooking the harbour, watch the seaplanes come and go, and take a sunset stroll while pretending you don’t already have plans to shop again tomorrow.
Along the walkway, you’ll also stumble across local vendors and small businesses, including spots like Newfoundland to Nanaimo.
And if you’re not quite ready to call it a night yet, make an experience purchase instead.
Catch a show at the Port Theatre, Nanaimo’s performing arts venue and home to everything from live music and comedy to theatre productions, dance performances, and touring shows. Because honestly, ending the evening with live entertainment after a full day downtown? Kind of a power move.
Dinner, ocean views, local shopping, and a show all within walking distance? Nanaimo really does know how to do a downtown evening properly.
Day 2
Morning
We know. Yesterday was packed. Your wallet’s tired, your trunk’s full, and your reusable bags have officially seen some things. So today, we’re slowing it down a little… at least to start.
If you’re visiting between May and October and happen to be in Cedar on a Sunday, make your way to the Cedar Farmers Market.
This isn’t your average quick-stop market. We’re talking locally grown produce, sustainable seafood, handmade goods, pottery, jewellery, baked treats, fresh flowers, hot coffee, food trucks, and enough artisan finds to somehow leave with way more than you planned for.
It’s part market, part community hangout, and fully worth the stop.
Not here on a Sunday? Or maybe “slow morning” isn’t really your thing.
Head south to WildPlay Element Parks Nanaimo, where Nanaimo’s rainforest becomes your personal obstacle course. Zip lines, aerial adventures, giant swings, and freefalls? Yeah, things escalate quickly here.
Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or just trying to prove you’re braver than your friends, WildPlay is the kind of experience you’ll be talking about long after your shopping bags are unpacked.
Afternoon
Next up: Nanaimo’s North End. And yes, your shopping day is somehow still going strong.
Home to three of Nanaimo’s main shopping centres, the North End mixes familiar favourites with local hidden gems tucked throughout nearby neighbourhoods. Between the big stops, keep an eye out for smaller boutiques and locally owned shops like Island-ish in the Rutherford area, packed with Vancouver Island-inspired goods and gifts you’ll suddenly convince yourself you absolutely need.
And before you write off the malls, hear us out. Nanaimo’s shopping centres are more than just the big brands. You’ll also find independent businesses, local vendors, pop-up markets, seasonal craft fairs, and weekend events sprinkled throughout the year.
Make sure these stops are on your list:
Because sometimes the best shopping strategy is a little bit of everything: local boutiques, vintage finds, artisan markets, and maybe one dangerously effective “quick stop” at the mall.
Evening
Last evening in Nanaimo. And honestly? We think you’ve earned a little experience shopping.
Sure, souvenirs are great, but stories, memories, and the occasional “Wait, Nanaimo has that?” moment tend to stick with you a little longer.
Start your evening at the Nanaimo Museum, where local history, culture, and community stories all come together under one roof. From coal mining history and Indigenous culture to rotating exhibits and the legendary Nanaimo Bar display, it’s the perfect place to brush up on your Nanaimo knowledge before heading home sounding suspiciously like a local.
More of an art lover? Make your way to the Nanaimo Art Gallery, a contemporary public gallery known for its rotating exhibitions, thought-provoking installations, locally crafted goods, and occasional workshops and community events. Whether you’re deeply into the arts or just here because “one quick look” turned into an hour, it’s a stop well worth making.
And lastly, history buffs, this one’s for you. The Vancouver Island Military Museum offers a fascinating look into Canada’s military history, featuring exhibits dedicated to past and present operations across all branches of the Canadian Armed Forces. Inside, you’ll find artifacts, uniforms, memorabilia, and stories that help bring decades of service and history to life.
Not a bad way to wrap up a Nanaimo getaway: a little culture, a little history, and just enough time left to start planning your next trip back.
Ready to shop?
Ready to shop? Yeah, we thought so.
Truthfully, there’s no way we could fit every incredible Nanaimo shop, market, maker, boutique, vintage find, café stop, and hidden gem into one itinerary. Half the magic of shopping around Nanaimo and the surrounding region is stumbling across the places you weren’t expecting to find in the first place.
So use this guide as your starting point, not your limit.
Wander down side streets. Pop into the store with the cool window display. Say yes to the local market. Grab the handmade mug, the vintage jacket, the art print, the snack for the road, and whatever else somehow ends up coming home with you.
Because around here, shopping isn’t just about buying things. It’s about discovering local stories, meeting passionate makers, supporting small businesses, and finding pieces of Nanaimo you’ll want to take home with you.
So go ahead. Shop a little longer. Explore a little further. And maybe leave some extra room in your suitcase… just in case.
