What inspired you to start your business in Nanaimo?

Nanaimo’s vibrant community and jaw-dropping scenery have always been a magnet for creativity and bold entrepreneurs. For many local business owners, setting up shop here wasn’t just about the view—it’s about the perfect mix of opportunity, an unbeatable sense of community, and the kind of natural beauty that makes you want to stay forever.

Eve Olive

“We were drawn to Nanaimo for its vibrant and diverse community. As newcomers to Canada, we wanted to create a space that reflects our values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, while showcasing plant-based cuisine. Nanaimo felt like the perfect place to share our passion for sustainable and compassionate living.”

Mrs. Riches Restaurant

“Our belief in the economy and growth of the city. We love Nanaimo and are 4 generations strong! Our family first came to Nanaimo in the early 1900s and we have grown up with Nanaimo and see all the potential it has.”

Island-Ish

“Having lived here since we were in elementary school we knew what kind of shop we wish we had that featured local artisans and other lines that suited our Island-ish lifestyle and kept talking about doing it. When working at another store that no longer exists, I kept saying someone should make a Nanaimo Bar soap and other items that tourists and locals could take on their travels. After our father (who had been a local businessman for decades – Mad Man McKays) passed away after a long battle with cancer, we had the time and energy to decide to go for it as entrepreneurship was in our blood and our families were at a place it seemed like the right time. One of our first products we had made was Nanaimo Bar soap, which is still a top seller 10 years later.”

Noble Common Hair Co.

“After doing hair for 25 years in Nanaimo, I felt there was a need to create my own brand and open my own salon.  After travelling the world and being an educator – there was a need to bring something new to Nanaimo – from things I saw around the world – the little things I loved, and brought them here to my salon.  A place to welcome people from all walks of life, customer service and relationships are everything to us and we are proud to be an elevated and innovative place for our clients to come and feel at home.”

Are there any positive specific customer stories or interactions that stand out to you that have taken place over the years?

One of the best perks of running a business in Nanaimo? The amazing people you meet along the way, of course! With a community this tight-knit and full of energy, it’s no surprise that local businesses and their customers are creating some unforgettable moments. Whether it’s a laugh shared over a cup of coffee or a customer who’s practically family by the end, these stories are what make Nanaimo truly unforgettable.

Windowseat Books

“It’s incredible to me how much joy I get from my customers. It is truly a community and every day brings something special. You never know what is going to happen when you come into the store, who you will meet, what you will discuss. Talking books leads to talking about everything else. My customers share their life stories with me and I share mine with them. You come in to dream, explore and learn. I have been extremely surprised and filled with gratitude for the love I have received for opening this bookstore.”

Newfoundland to Nanaimo

“We have many excellent experiences and interactions with customers from Nanaimo and from all parts of the world.

We most appreciate how customers have embraced our “Unwanted Canadian Change” program which is matched by our business and sent to Loaves & Fishes, thousands of dollars of food have been purchased through this program.”

WildPlay

“Being able to watch adults play like they are kids again is always a wonderful experience. It is too rare that people get to let go and just play. Being able to swing through the trees is something that helps people let go and have fun. When generations of families get to participate together, it is always a special time.”

Green Thumb Nursery

“We have been lucky enough to employ hundreds of people from Nanaimo and the surrounding area over the many years we have been in business, and have multiple family groups like a father and his son and daughter, or siblings on our team. Many people have very fond memories of visiting over the years, and we have former staff who come back in bringing their kids (and grandkids!).”

What do you love most about being a part of the Nanaimo business community?

Being a part of Nanaimo’s business community isn’t just about making sales, it’s about being surrounded by a group of go-getters who are as passionate about this city as they are about what they do. It’s a place where competition takes a backseat to collaboration, and where you feel more like family than just another face in the crowd. So, what really gets Nanaimo’s business owners excited about being a part of Nanaimo’s thriving scene?

Sound Heritage

“The community of businesses in Nanaimo are collaborative, inclusive and just plain cool. Especially my neighbours and friends in the Victoria Crescent/Downtown area. It’s exciting to be a part of that story at a time when Nanaimo is growing so rapidly.  Everyone’s working hard to build their little slice of community while also supporting each other.

Don’t believe the negative news cycles, downtown is ALIVE and YOUR patronage is making it better!”

Nanaimo Hospice Shoppe

“We love the community, we can’t pick just one thing! They show up for us in so many ways! Customers who donate goods, throw a few dollars in our Love Jar when checking out, businesses who reach out to donate new goods to help us fundraise a few more dollars. The stories we get to hear from past and present clients on how they found the support they needed, knowing our hard work at the shoppe allows stories to continue for years to come.”

Wyrd Wealth

Meeting all the weirdos that are attracted to Wyrd Wealth and all the magical objects we have littered about the space. Hearing their stories. Especially elders in our community that will pop in and feel triggered to share experiences from Nanaimo’s past that relate to our aesthetic.  Feeling the sense of a strong sub-community when people tell us they were sent upstairs from our pals at Paisano’s Pizza or Lucky Cloud.”

Milk Jam Donuts

“Everyone is looking out for one another; everyone is supportive. It feels great to be a part of something like that. I consider many of the business owners in this community my friends.”

Pure Spa Nanaimo

“I love how businesses support each other whether with collaborating for events and giveaways or just a simple shoutout and recommendation. We look out for each other!”
