We know. The back-to-school commercials are everywhere, and there’s something in the air that feels suspiciously fall-ish. But don’t let that fool you. The good part isn’t even close to being over.
From music festivals and colourful trails to warm days and quieter vibes, fall might just be Nanaimo’s best-kept secret. The crowds thin out, the weather sticks around, and there’s still plenty happening across Nanaimo and the region.
Keep reading to see why the good part isn’t over just yet.
Fall Weather? It Might Be Better…
You heard us right. Fall weather here is kind of unmatched. Slightly cooler temps mean you can actually get out and enjoy everything the region has to offer without melting, but it’s still warm enough to stretch out on the beach or sneak in a little dip.
Think low-to-mid 20s (that’s high 60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit for our friends south of the border), sunshine, and a few rainy days here and there to keep things cozy and keep us humble.
Ahh, fall. The season locals wait all year for.
Events Don’t Stop with Summer
Summer might “end,” but Nanaimo’s event calendar certainly doesn’t. Those markets you came to love all summer? Many keep going right through fall, and some don’t stop at all. Check out the Cedar Farmers Market right through Halloween, while Island Roots Farmers’ Market and the Gabriola Farmers Market keep the good stuff going year-round.
And there’s still plenty of live music and performances to get you dancing, singing along, or happily watching from your seat. We’re looking at you, Nanaimo International Jazz Festival and Port Theatre.
Then there’s the Vancouver Island Exhibition (VIEX), rolling into town in late September. Grab your cowboy boots (hat optional, but encouraged) and get ready for Nanaimo’s country fair, complete with live entertainment, agricultural exhibits and competitions, local food, artisan vendors, family-friendly fun, and plenty of reasons to stick around.
See? The good part definitely isn’t over.
Trails are Quieter, More Colourful, and Oh So Fresh
You know the feeling. The seasons start to change, there’s a freshness in the air, the leaves start to turn, and everything just smells a little more like fall. Ahhh. We’re dreaming about it already.
Ammonite Falls is flowing a little faster. Mount Benson is much more tolerable (and a whole lot less dusty). And Westwood Lake? Shimmering with all those bright fall colours.
Prefer to be on the water? Fall is still a great time to head over to one of our surrounding islands, explore the local lakes and bays, get out for a paddle, or even sneak in a swim at the beach.
Looking for a little more of an adventure? Saysutshun’s ferry service runs into mid-October, making fall a great time to slow things down, explore the trails, take in the changing season, and experience the Island with fewer crowds. And trust us, the fall vibes over there? Immaculate.
Just remember: fall likes to keep things interesting. Always double-check the weather, tides, and conditions before heading out!
Quieter Streets, Fewer Lines, and a Vacation That Feels All About You
The kids are back at school, university students are back to studying, and everyone else is settling into their routines. You know what that means? It might finally be time for that vacay you’ve been putting off. Maybe the timing never lined up, someone else snagged the good vacation days, or those peak-season prices just hurt the wallet a little too much.
Like we said, the seasons change, but Nanaimo really doesn’t. Us locals are still vibing at festivals, exploring our outdoor playground, hitting our favourite spots, and soaking up every second of the so-called “quiet” season.
And with nature putting on a full-on show - bright colours, stunning sunsets, crisp mornings, and weather that makes getting outside a whole lot more enjoyable - we have just one question: Why wouldn’t you want to be here now?

So, summer’s over? Says who?
The weather’s still warm, the trails are getting prettier, the events keep coming, and Nanaimo isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Fall just means fewer crowds, cooler days, brighter colours, and a little more room to enjoy it all.
Come for a weekend. Stay a little longer. Sneak in that trip you thought you missed your chance for.
Trust us. The good part isn’t over.
