Tucked into the Old City Quarter, Windowseat Books is a staple for book lovers and anyone who appreciates a good browse.
Between the shelves of must-reads, you’ll find puzzles, bookish socks, mugs, bookmarks, and all the little extras that make it very hard to leave empty-handed.
Fair warning: you came for one book. You’re leaving with three.
As part of our Nanaimo Business Feature Series, we’re chatting with local businesses to hear their stories, what keeps them here, and how you can support them.
What inspired you to start your business in Nanaimo?
Honestly, it was happenstance that I opened a business in Nanaimo. I had been in Nanaimo for only one year when I had the crazy dream of opening a bookstore and finding the space in the Old City Quarter solidified everything for me. I just love Downtown and the Old City Quarter. I wanted to come back to the island and put roots down and I fell in love with the area immediately. It felt like home.
Are there any positive specific customer stories or interactions that stand out to you that have taken place over the years?
It’s incredible to me how much joy I get from my customers. It is truly a community and everyday brings something special. You never know what is going to happen when you come into the store, who you will meet, what you will discuss. Talking books leads to talking about everything else. My customers share their life stories with me, and I share mine with them. You come in to dream, explore and learn. I have been extremely surprised and filled with gratitude for the love I have received for opening this bookstore.
But one big thing I didn't realize was that the store would bring me, and just warms my heart, is seeing the kids grow up! What a blessing!
What’s one thing in your store that’s a great gift?
Books! And more books! Haha! We also have very cool puzzles, bookish things like socks, mugs and bookmarks. Cookbooks are always a good gift! We do personalized book bundles as well, if you are having a hard time choosing books for your loved ones...let us do the work! We are very good at helping you find the right book for the right person. Oh, and we also have wonderful Denman Island Tea!
What are some of your favourite Nanaimo businesses?
The Old City Quarter holds such a special place in my heart. The local owners and operators were so welcoming when we first moved in, and now they're my work family (it's like having an office that spans 2 blocks!). So pretty much any business in the OCQ! And, of course, the incredible bookstore Strong Nations!!
What would you say to someone considering starting their own business in Nanaimo?
Talk to local business owners… foster community… especially if that someone is new to Nanaimo. Nanaimo is such a special and unique place with many different community hubs. Start small, think big! Maybe! I do not think I am the best at giving business advice, haha! Be bold and creative, you've got this!
How do you see your business contributing to the community in Nanaimo?
I think the beauty of a bookstore is that the selling/sharing of books creates strong connections within the community. We are a place of gathering, of sharing ideas. We curate our titles because of our personal taste but also because of the needs of our customer base, our community. As we grow, we hope to offer even more events, to introduce local authors to the community, to support other community endeavours. It is truly a labour of love, and we hope to spread that love to Nanaimo!
What do you love most about being a part of the Nanaimo business community?
The Nanaimo downtown and Old City Quarter business owners and operators all have such big hearts – they’re nice, kind people who have given me and the store so much support. I wouldn’t have expanded to this new location without Emily from Mad About Ewe; and it would have been a dreary six years at our old location without our neighbour Jonny from Jonny’s Barbershop.
It starts with a book… and somehow turns into a conversation, a connection, and maybe a new favourite spot.
Windowseat Books is proof that the best places aren’t just where you shop, they’re where you feel at home.
And yes, you’re still leaving with three books.
