For 40 years, Sound Heritage has been the spot for Nanaimo’s music lovers, crate diggers, and anyone who knows vinyl just hits different.

Tucked inside one of downtown’s oldest heritage buildings, it’s equal parts record shop, repair hub, and community hangout. Think rare finds, vintage gems, and a team that knows their stuff.

Add in swap meets, local artist showcases, and a steady pulse of events, and you’ve got a place that keeps downtown sounding pretty good.

As part of our Nanaimo Business Feature Series, we’re chatting with local businesses to hear their stories, what keeps them here, and how you can support them.

What inspired you to start your business in Nanaimo?

I have always had a passion for music and community-building. I pivoted my career from Project Management in the not-for-profit sector to working for the previous owner of Sound Heritage, Jean Lemieux. Working on Victoria Crescent with John opened my eyes to the importance of retail businesses for building community and bringing people together over a shared love of music. I also saw the potential to grow the impact and success of Sound Heritage as the only retail store in Nanaimo specializing in vintage stereo equipment. Jean wanted to retire and sell the business, and I was honoured to purchase it from him and officially take ownership in June 2022.

Are there any positive specific customer stories or interactions that stand out to you that have taken place over the years?

Restoring vintage stereos that are family heirlooms, or that folks have kept for a long time in hopes of one day enjoying them again, are always special moments.

When visitors find records here that they've been searching for for a long time, those are standout moments, too. And when bands and musicians are playing in town and drop in to visit, we love that!

What’s one thing in your store that’s a great gift?

A turntable makes for a wonderful gift that anyone - no matter what age or musical preference - can appreciate.

What are some of your favourite Nanaimo businesses?

Arnie's Emporium, Mainstay Tattoo, Primary Skateboards, and That 50's Barbershop are some of my favourites.

What would you say to someone considering starting their own business in Nanaimo?

Believe in what you do, and be the best at what you do. Treat your clients with the utmost respect. Your success will follow.

How do you see your business contributing to the community in Nanaimo?

We are the only retail store in Nanaimo specializing in vintage stereo buying, selling and repairs. We strive to build an appreciation for vintage music and stereo. We frequently host music events and hire local artists to revitalize the store, inside and out. We celebrate the heritage of the building and neighbourhood through our decor and culture. We're proud to provide a safe, friendly, inclusive place for community members to grow and share their passion for music!

What do you love most about being a part of the Nanaimo business community?

The community of businesses in Nanaimo are collaborative, inclusive and just plain cool. Especially my neighbours and friends in the Victoria Crescent/downtown area. It's exciting to be a part of that story at a time when Nanaimo is growing so rapidly.  Everyone's working hard to build their little slice of community while also supporting each other.

Don't believe the negative news cycles, downtown is ALIVE, and YOUR patronage is making it better!

Vinyl, vintage gear, and a community that actually shows up, Sound Heritage has all three dialled in.

So next time you’re downtown, pop in, flip through a few crates, and maybe walk out with something you didn’t know you were looking for.
