(For Anyone Who Thinks Nanaimo Isn’t an Arts City)

Whoever said Nanaimo and the surrounding region isn’t a home of the arts has clearly never been, and we’re here to politely (but confidently) correct the record. From contemporary galleries to live theatre, public art, and ferry-worthy creative scenes, Nanaimo’s arts and culture offering is quietly stacked.

This two-day Nanaimo arts itinerary is designed to help you slow down, wander often, and experience the city’s creative side the way locals do. No rushing. No pretence. Just good art and good vibes.

You Gotta Stay the Weekend

First things first: you’ll want more than a day. To really dig into Nanaimo’s arts and culture scene, staying overnight is a must.

From scenic ocean-view rooms to quiet lakeside escapes, Nanaimo offers accommodation options to match whatever your travel vibe happens to be. Book a place that keeps you close to downtown so you can spend less time commuting and more time exploring. Book your stay here.

Getting here is easy, too. Ferries, float planes, helicopters, we’ve got options. You pick the route, we’ll handle the inspiration. Read more here!

Day 1

Morning

Alright, now for the fun stuff. Start Day 1 with a relaxed wander through downtown Nanaimo. It’s the best way to get oriented and immediately plugged into the local creative scene.

Stroll along Commercial Street and pop into artisan shops like the  Nanaimo Ceramic Arts Gallery, The Artisans’ Studio, Artzi Stuff, Triple Moon, Canadian Indigenous Art. Expect handcrafted ceramics, jewellery, textiles, and Indigenous art rooted in story and place. Browsing encouraged. Self-control optional.

From there, wander up to Victoria Crescent, one of Nanaimo’s most underrated arts pockets. Explore The Vault, the Upstairs Bazaar, and the small independent shops scattered nearby. It’s cozy, creative, and very “how did I not know this existed?”

Afternoon

While you’re near The Vault, refuel. You’ve got a full afternoon ahead.

The Nanaimo Art Gallery is a cornerstone of the city’s contemporary arts scene, showcasing rotating exhibitions from regional, national, and Indigenous artists. Thoughtful, current, and refreshingly grounded, it fits Nanaimo perfectly. Curious, creative, and doing its own thing. Perfect for a rainy afternoon, a creative reset, or proving Nanaimo has way more depth than you expected.

Added bonus? The gift shop is fuelled by local Vancouver Island creatives. Think handcrafted soaps, DIY art kits, expressive pottery, jewellery, and a rotating lineup of pieces you’ll absolutely convince yourself you need. Honestly, the list is long. You may as well pop in and see for yourself.

Right next door, the Nanaimo Museum dives into the stories that shaped the city, from coal mining roots to community history and Indigenous heritage. It adds context to everything you’ve seen so far. Consider it the “why” behind Nanaimo’s creative character.

Evening

Did someone say dinner and a show? Excellent choice.

Grab dinner downtown before curtain call. Craving Mexican? Try Gina’s Mexican Café. Looking for something cozy and close? Mélange or the Modern Café have you covered. Or head into the Old City Quarter for La Stella Trattoria, Asteras Greek Taverna, or Milton Street Public House.

Then it’s showtime. Nanaimo’s performing arts scene shows up year-round with everything from touring productions to community-led performances. Catch a show at the Port Theatre, Malaspina Theatre, OV Arts Centre, or with the Nanaimo Theatre Group.

Day 2

Morning

You’ve got a big day ahead, so let’s get rolling. Start with coffee and breakfast at Javawocky Coffee House on the waterfront, then head toward the seawall at Maffeo Sutton Park.

Not all art in Nanaimo lives indoors. Along the waterfront and throughout downtown, public art installations, murals, and sculptures pop up where you least expect them. Slow your pace. Look around. Nanaimo rewards people who wander.

Afternoon

Known as the Isle of the Arts, Gabriola Island is just a short ferry ride from Nanaimo and an absolute must if you like your creativity a little wild around the edges. The crossing alone feels like a reset, and once you land, things move at a refreshingly unhurried pace.

Before heading out to explore, fuel up with lunch at Mad Rona’s Coffee Bar (conveniently near the ferry once you arrive). It’s the ideal stop for creative comfort food, solid coffee, and a laid-back atmosphere that sets the tone for the afternoon ahead. Eat well now, Gabriola rewards wandering, not rushing.

Now it’s time to explore! You’ll quickly see why it’s earned its artsy reputation. Home to painters, potters, sculptors, and mixed-media artists, Gabriola’s creative scene lives everywhere. In studios tucked down country roads, small galleries, roadside signs, and everyday island life. There’s no single “arts district” here; discovery is part of the experience.

Time your visit right, and you’ll stumble into open studios that feel personal, unpolished, and deeply human, conversations with artists included. It’s art as it’s meant to be experienced: curious, accessible, and woven into the rhythm of the place.

Evening

Wrap up your weekend with live music and a side of character.

Venues like The Queen’s, the Nanaimo Bar, and the Vault Cafe regularly host local musicians in spaces where the vibes are laid-back and the talent is anything but. Think intimate shows, familiar faces, and that unmistakable Nanaimo feeling where the music’s good and no one’s trying too hard.

When summer rolls in, the city turns the volume up outdoors. From waterfront performances and pop-up concerts to music woven into festivals and community events, live music spills into parks, patios, and public spaces across Nanaimo. Grab a seat, wander past, or accidentally plan your evening around it, all acceptable approaches.

Happy Art-ing!

Nanaimo’s arts scene doesn’t shout. It invites. It’s layered, local, and proudly underrated. The kind of place where creativity feels lived-in, not staged.

If you’re planning an arts and culture getaway on Vancouver Island and want something a little more real (and a lot less expected), Nanaimo’s ready when you are.
