What happens when you wake up in a place that insists it’s your “new home,” even though your heart is still somewhere else? Welcome to a residence where memories misbehave, friendships form in the fog, and music remembers what the mind forgets. This is a fresh, compassionate look inside a dementia care facility—where forgetting doesn’t mean the story is over.
Joëlle Rabu brings her new work I Don’t Belong Here – Stories Beyond the Edge of Forgetting to Vancouver Island from January 17–25, guiding audiences through a tender journey of lost identity, unexpected humour, and the profound need for connection.
Written by Joëlle Rabu & lifelong friend, Kelly Wyatt, directed by Kymme Patrick, with music direction by Nico Rhodes, this moving new Canadian play blends humour, grief, and humanity, all underscored by the timeless songs of Harry Nilsson. Joëlle embodies more than a dozen characters—joined by Wyatt and Rhodes—to portray residents, families, and care aides with honesty, vulnerability, and heart.
