The fully wheelchair-accessible Maffeo Sutton Park is the jewel in Nanaimo’s crown, and a popular spot for a walk (with or without your pup), a jog, or scoot, or to just drink in the beauty of the dynamic harbour. The inclusive playground is universally designed, with some wheelchair accessible features, and there is an always popular zip line, and a fun play structure for the rambunctious ones in your group.
The park plays host to several festivals and special events over the year, such as the well-attended Dragon Boat Festival, which takes place every summer in July. The Lions Pavilion is a covered stage for enjoying shows and entertainment. There is also the famous “Nanaimo” sign, perfect for a classic photo-op, and a footbridge over the lagoon along the Harbour Front Walkway; so many reasons to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery.
There are many
picnic tables through
out the park, making it a true community gathering place. Accessible washrooms are also located near the parking lot. There are accessible parking spaces near the entrance in the main lot.
There is a small passenger ferry that runs between Maffeo Sutton Park and Saysutshun (Newcastle Island), but the boat is not accessible for my scooter.
