Located downtown on Nanaimo’s waterfront, with gorgeous views of the harbour, the Strait of Georgia and the Coast Mountains, is the Coast Bastion Hotel. The hotel has many accessible features, including two barrier-free rooms that are well-appointed for wheelchair and scooter users.

The lobby at the Coast Bastion is spacious and well-lit with tiled floors, and a comfortable seating area across from the front desk. There is a short flight of stairs leading up to the Minnoz Restaurant and Ballroom, but there is a stairlift currently being repaired that will take folks up in the future.

The accessible rooms are well-designed, and have wide entryways so that entering the space is comfortable. Once inside the room, there is ample area to manoeuvre around the beds and furniture. There is a peephole on the door at wheelchair-accessible height. The bathroom has a roll-in shower with grab bars, and an accessible fold-up bench seat that is wall-hung. The toilet is universal height with grab bars and the countertop/sink are at the correct height with clearance underneath for a wheelchair user’s comfort.

Back downstairs at the lobby level, the weight room has hard, rubber flooring that is mostly accessible, except for a small portion of the room that is raised and accessed by two stairs.

The underground pay parking in the city-run parkade, accessed from Front Street, has ramp and elevator access to the hotel.
