From vintage treasures to locally crafted goods, there’s something unexpected around every corner. Start in the Old City Quarter with a visit to the cozy and magical Windowseat Books, or pop into Kitties and Cream to browse cat-themed goodies and maybe meet your new feline best friend.
In the heart of downtown, Funk Revival is your go-to for bold, pre-loved fashion finds—featuring vintage gems in all sizes, for all genders and styles.
Need a comfort break while you’re exploring? Check out Tourism Nanaimo’s inclusive washroom map to find a safe and welcoming space when nature calls.

Enjoy the Beautiful Outdoors
Nanaimo’s waterfront? Yeah. It’s the real deal. Whether you’re spotting orcas on a wildlife tour, paddling out on a kayak, or just soaking up the sun with sand between your toes, there’s no wrong way to enjoy the ocean here.
Feeling active? Take your pick from a huge variety of parks and trails. From laid-back strolls with your iced coffee in hand to pulse-pounding hikes with killer views, there’s a route for every pace and every mood.
And for the adrenaline crew—this one’s for you. Hang on tight (literally) for the Primal Swing at WildPlay Nanaimo, where you’ll fly through the canyon at up to 140 km/h. Bonus: it’s the perfect excuse to cling to your adventure buddy.
Soak Up the History and Culture
Looking to connect with the culture and stories that shape Nanaimo? You’re in the right place.
Start your journey at the Nanaimo Art Gallery on Commercial Street—an inclusive and welcoming space that celebrates creativity in all its forms. With exhibitions featuring artists of all genders and backgrounds, and workshops that often highlight Pride and identity, it’s a vibrant hub for expression and inspiration.
Then, step into the past at the Nanaimo Museum, where you’ll find everything from a replica coal mine to exhibits honouring Snuneymuxw First Nation culture and Nanaimo’s logging roots. As a designated Safe Harbour location, it’s a space where everyone is welcomed and respected.
Just a short ferry ride from downtown, Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) offers a deeper connection to the land and Snuneymuxw heritage. Walk the forested trails, unwind on sandy beaches, and if you’re up for something extra special, book a guided cultural walking tour with a Coast Salish guide to gain powerful insight into the island’s stories and traditions.

Dining and Entertainment
No trip to Nanaimo is complete without diving into the local food scene and soaking up the city’s vibrant nightlife. From sweet treats to craft brews and everything in between, these 2SLGBTQIA+ owned and supporting businesses are the perfect place to start:
Black Rabbit Kitchen and White Rabbit Coffee Co. are local gems tucked inside a beautifully restored historic station in the Old City Quarter. Expect cozy vibes, seasonal ingredients, and menus that cater to all—yes, that includes gluten-free and vegan eats!
Burnt Honey Dessert Company is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. With unique, small-batch ice cream and macaron flavours (plus the smell of fresh waffle cones in the air), you might have a hard time picking just one.
Over at Two Sparrows Cupcakes in Woodgrove Centre, the bright, fun atmosphere is almost as sweet as the cupcakes themselves. Pro tip: if you see a giant inflatable dinosaur, you’re in the right place.
Craving a relaxed pint? White Sails Brewing has you covered. This award-winning taproom serves up craft beers brewed on-site, plus weekly trivia and live events to keep things lively.
And don’t miss The Vault Café, that iconic pink corner café you’ve probably seen in your feed. It’s an eclectic spot known for funky décor, cozy food and drink options, and live music or performances from Wednesday through Saturday.
