If you think winter on Vancouver Island means hiding indoors, Nanaimo is here to lovingly prove you wrong. This is the season of misty harbours, crackling pub patios, fog-draped forests, and bakeries that should honestly be illegal. Our beaches don’t freeze (too terribly), our trails stay lush, and our idea of “winter gear” is a raincoat and a good attitude. Cozy? Always. Boring? Never.
Whether you’re into gallery wandering, brewery hopping, coastal cabin-ing, or taking a ferry to an island full of artists (yes, that’s a real thing), winter in Nanaimo is packed with just the right amount of adventure. The warm, delicious, scenic kind.
Ready? Let’s weekend.

Day 1
Morning
Ease into the day with something warm and steamy… beverage-wise, obviously. Grab a latte from Regard, the Vault, or any waterfront café where the windows fog up and the sea lions provide unsolicited commentary. Once caffeinated, wander Old City Quarter and Commercial Street for a little local shopping. This is where handmade jewellery, craft chocolate, weird-but-wonderful art, and Nanaimo Bars come out to tempt you. Buy gifts for other people if you must… but no judgment if you don’t.
Afternoon
Rain starting to fall? Cute. Nanaimo calls that ambience. Head to WildPlay and spend the afternoon zipping through the trees like a soggy superhero. Not a heights person? No problem. Keep it cozy and cultured with a gallery crawl instead. The Nanaimo Art Gallery, Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, Artisans’ Studio, and a dozen other studios will gladly shelter you from the drizzle. When hunger hits, warm up at Longwood Brew Pub, Wolf Brewing, or White Sails. Nothing beats rainy-day comfort food and craft beer.
Evening
As night rolls in, Nanaimo gets cozy in the best way. Pick a restaurant, settle in for something delicious, and then catch a show, whether it’s theatre at The Port, an acoustic set in a tucked-away bar, or a surprise live band downtown. Finish the night with a sweet treat from Kinsu Chocolates or Cold Front Gelato and stroll the waterfront while the harbour lights sparkle. Pro-tip: sea lions yelling after 10 p.m. count as nightlife.

Day 2
Morning
Start slow with pastries from Bohdi’s Bakery or your new favourite local café, then take your breakfast to Maffeo Sutton Park where the ocean looks extra dramatic in winter. Scenic, moody, aesthetic… check, check, check. After that, hop on the 20-minute ferry to Gabriola Island, where winter is all about cozy studios, welcoming artists, and roadside stands selling everything from pottery to fresh eggs. It’s like an island-sized Etsy shop… but with misty cliffs and salty air.
Afternoon
Head back to Nanaimo for a little history-and-hot-drink combo. The Nanaimo Museum has stories of Snuneymuxw history, coal towns, relics, scandals, and surprises. The perfect rainy-day escape. When you’re finished being smart, reward yourself with another Nanaimo Bar stop. Science says you’ve earned it.
Evening
Your finale? Peak winter coziness. Check into Snaw-Naw-As Campground & Cabins or a waterfront stay where chunky blankets, ocean views, and board games take over. Order dinner in, pick up takeout from a local favourite, or head out for one last live-music fix if you’re feeling energetic. Otherwise, curl up, listen to the rain, and smugly think about how you chose coastal winter over shovelling snow.

Two days in Nanaimo will ruin winter anywhere else. Foggy harbour mornings, artsy island afternoons, brewery dinners, ocean views, live music, and Nanaimo Bars whenever the mood strikes. Winter here is soft, salty, cozy, playful, and proudly low-frostbite. We don’t shut down, we slow down, warm up, and enjoy the good life.
So pack a scarf, bring your appetite, and come get rained on in the best possible way. Nanaimo in winter hits different, and yes, we’ll save you a Nanaimo Bar.
