Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150th and Beyond

The City of Nanaimo invites you to join us for Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150 & Beyond, a winter artfestival that is a celebration of light, art, land, and community. Temporary art installations will illuminatepublic space, transforming a once familiar environment into something new, a place-making experiencethat ignites imagination, inspiring hope and excitement for the future of our community. The festival will open with an event on January 22, 2025, in Maffeo Sutton Park, with live performances,and involvement of local community groups to mark the date of the first Council meeting 150 years agofor the newly incorporated City of Nanaimo. Temporary art installations will be on display in identifiedpublic spaces, encouraging visitors to explore park and community spaces. Musicians and performerswill be engaged in performances over the course of the evening at locations corresponding withtemporary art installations. The central event space in a local waterfront park (Maffeo Sutton Park), willinclude interactive booths, food trucks, City of Nanaimo 150 merchandise, children’s activities, andadditional educational and promotional material. The HMCS Nanaimo plans to visit Nanaimo for severaldays at the beginning of the festival. Culture Staff and the Port of Nanaimo are working together toarrange berth for the vessel. The HMCS Nanaimo intends to offer focused outreach for visitors to viewthe vessel throughout the first weekend of the event.  Artists and cultural community partners will further be highlighted through various public engagementopportunities through the course of the festival, such as artist talks, tours, and educational workshopshosted within a variety of cultural spaces. Temporary public art projects will remain available for viewing until the festival closing event onFebruary 17th (Family Day). The final event will focus on engaging families and youth, withperformances by child-friendly acts and take place in one centralized location (Maffeo Sutton Park). And Winter Came….. Join Jenny and her friends on Sunday, Jan.26, 2:30 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church for a concert with a variety of winter tunes. You will hear some of Nanaimo’s most talented classical musicians playing organ, piano and strings. This is the first benefit concert to raise funds for the newly formed Old City Arts Hub operating out of the St. Andrew's United Church. Tickets are $30, available via Eventbrite, Windowseat Books and at the door. Musicians include: Alexandra Lee, Erin Kelly, Ester Kovacova, Leslie Krull, Nick Ross, Karl Rainer, Sarah Oliver, Hannah Wilson, Laurie Meijer Drees, Stefanie Unger, Liam Pistor and Jenny Vincent

The 2025 Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival features a captivating selection of films and documentaries centered around mountain culture, adventure, and exploration. Attendees will be treated to a diverse range of films showcasing breathtaking landscapes, adrenaline-pumping outdoor activities, and inspiring stories of individuals pushing their limits in the world's most challenging environments. The festival will have include screenings of films that explore various aspects of mountain life, such as rock climbing, skiing, mountaineering, and environmental conservation. VIMFF is known for bringing together a community of outdoor enthusiasts, filmmakers, and adventurers, fostering a sense of shared passion for the mountains. The festival continues its tradition of celebrating the spirit of exploration and the connection between humans and the natural world. All proceeds of the event go towards to Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club for the continued stewardship of mountain biking in Nanaimo and the maintenance of trails.

When Sharma’s voice floats out over the audience, she makes countless mysterious connections with the audience members. Trust Fall

From origami objects that are folded based on remote instructions, to artworks developed through psychic intervention, Trust Fall is an exhibition featuring works by Jon Sasaki and Laura Gildner that celebrates the creative potential of mistakes and miscommunication. The Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society welcomes the return of the powerhouse duo of Joe Farnsworth and Sarah Hanahan to Nanaimo on Feb. 1. Farnsworth and Hanahan lit up the stage and wowed our audience last year, and had such a great time that they are coming back to Vancouver Island for another rocking good time at The Queen’s. Nanaimo's own, the phenomenal multi-instrumentalist, John Lee will be joining them on bass. This all-ages event supports jazz music education in Nanaimo and features a pre-show set by the Wellington Jazz Academy. Full food and beverage service provided by The Queen's.
