Image by: Sean Fenzl For Commercial St., artist Samuel Roy-Bois has created a series of artworks that directly respond to the vibrant street where Nanaimo Art Gallery is located. Drawing inspiration from architecture and streetscape elements, large wooden sculptures echo Commercial Street’s built environment—the street’s layout, a vanished window, and a cairn that has recently been removed—as well as aspects of its social dynamics and commercial exchanges. Roy-Bois has collaborated with local artists and businesses to engage in what he calls a sculptural conversation—building community connections that transcend physical boundaries. Through these relationships, Roy-Bois brings new elements into play with his sculptural forms. These include a drinking glass borrowed from Mon Petit Choux cafe, a record chosen by the artist and one recommended by Steve Lebitsching from Fascinating Rhythm, antique and imported objects from Steven Johns of Red Shelf Decor, and a shirt bought, and one borrowed, from Rumours Vintage Collective. Commercial St also includes artistic contributions by Bronwyn Arundel from Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, graffiti artist Doktoer, and photographs by David Spearing courtesy of Nanaimo Archives. The exhibition is accompanied by new writing from Canadian poet, essayist, and novelist Lisa Robertson. The artworks and objects in this exhibition reflect the everchanging network of events, individuals, and materials present on Commercial Street, brought together through playful interactions, coalescing in sculptural form. A lifelong New Yorker, pianist Ray Gallon has been a mainstay on the jazz scene for over three decades, with a resume that includes touring and recording with many legendary jazz masters, including Ron Carter, Art Farmer, Lionel Hampton/Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Hendricks, and Sheila Jordan. Rooted in bebop and blues, Ray’s expressive, swingin’ playing melds old and new into a fresh, original style. Born and raised in Nanaimo, Connor Stewart is a gifted saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist based in New Orleans, known for his extraordinary versatility and mastery of traditional jazz, swing, and bebop. These Indigenous Comedians have carved their names into the stand-up comedy scene, bringing laughter to audiences across the globe. Their hilarious performances have graced renowned platforms like Disney+, HBO, Prime Video, Crave TV, APTN, CBC, Sirius XM, iTunes, and TUBI. Now they are bringing their unique comedic stylings to Nanaimo, BC. The Bad Apples, are the comedic duo of Nelson Mayer (@nelsonmayercomedy) and Clayton T. Stewart (@funnyctstewart). With Special Guest Host Drea Omer (@bombs_diggity)! Nelson Mayer, hailing from the vibrant city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brings his Metis heritage to the forefront of his comedy. With an international touring record that spans Europe and an extensive comedic journey throughout Canada and the US, Mayer's comedic prowess knows no bounds. Notably, he has performed at the illustrious Comedy Store in Los Angeles, an iconic milestone for any stand-up comedian. In 2018, Mayer's comedic brilliance earned him a spot as a Finalist in the esteemed World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas. His talent continued to shine, with a victorious win as the "Comedian of the North" in the 2020 Comedy Competition. Stewart, representing the Peguis First Nation, brings his proud Ojibwe heritage and Treaty membership to his uproarious performances. Drea Omer is a fast-rising Indigenous comedian with a wonderfully autistic, “professional big kid” view of the world that makes her instantly memorable. Known as Aunt D or Bombs Diggity, she lives in Saskatchewan with her five kids and three dogs. In just two years she’s performed across Canada and L.A., toured with “SKoden, Stoodis, Standup!” and “No Reservations!”, and will soon be the first comedian featured in ROOM Magazine.
