Image by: Sean Fenzl For Commercial St., artist Samuel Roy-Bois has created a series of artworks that directly respond to the vibrant street where Nanaimo Art Gallery is located. Drawing inspiration from architecture and streetscape elements, large wooden sculptures echo Commercial Street’s built environment—the street’s layout, a vanished window, and a cairn that has recently been removed—as well as aspects of its social dynamics and commercial exchanges. Roy-Bois has collaborated with local artists and businesses to engage in what he calls a sculptural conversation—building community connections that transcend physical boundaries. Through these relationships, Roy-Bois brings new elements into play with his sculptural forms. These include a drinking glass borrowed from Mon Petit Choux cafe, a record chosen by the artist and one recommended by Steve Lebitsching from Fascinating Rhythm, antique and imported objects from Steven Johns of Red Shelf Decor, and a shirt bought, and one borrowed, from Rumours Vintage Collective. Commercial St also includes artistic contributions by Bronwyn Arundel from Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, graffiti artist Doktoer, and photographs by David Spearing courtesy of Nanaimo Archives. The exhibition is accompanied by new writing from Canadian poet, essayist, and novelist Lisa Robertson. The artworks and objects in this exhibition reflect the everchanging network of events, individuals, and materials present on Commercial Street, brought together through playful interactions, coalescing in sculptural form. A lifelong New Yorker, pianist Ray Gallon has been a mainstay on the jazz scene for over three decades, with a resume that includes touring and recording with many legendary jazz masters, including Ron Carter, Art Farmer, Lionel Hampton/Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Hendricks, and Sheila Jordan. Rooted in bebop and blues, Ray’s expressive, swingin’ playing melds old and new into a fresh, original style. Born and raised in Nanaimo, Connor Stewart is a gifted saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist based in New Orleans, known for his extraordinary versatility and mastery of traditional jazz, swing, and bebop. Beginning in the 1860s, Nanaimo had a succession of four Chinatowns. The third Chinatown was destroyed by fire in 1960, which had a devastating effect on the community. The exhibition features the viewpoints of three artists who documented Nanaimo’s third Chinatown while it was still standing, and three contemporary artists who respond to Nanaimo’s Chinatowns through textile installation, painting and video, and consider what it means to reflect on these lost sites from the present moment.

With Special Guest Host Drea Omer (@bombs_diggity)! Nelson Mayer, hailing from the vibrant city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brings his Metis heritage to the forefront of his comedy. With an international touring record that spans Europe and an extensive comedic journey throughout Canada and the US, Mayer's comedic prowess knows no bounds. Notably, he has performed at the illustrious Comedy Store in Los Angeles, an iconic milestone for any stand-up comedian. In 2018, Mayer's comedic brilliance earned him a spot as a Finalist in the esteemed World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas. His talent continued to shine, with a victorious win as the "Comedian of the North" in the 2020 Comedy Competition. His comedic journey has taken him to iconic stages in Los Angeles, New York, and Hawaii, leaving a trail of laughter in his wake. Drea Omer is a fast-rising Indigenous comedian with a wonderfully autistic, “professional big kid” view of the world that makes her instantly memorable. Under the baton of conductor Sean O'Loughlin, audiences will travel across the cosmos through iconic orchestral works and legendary film scores. The program features celestial highlights from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, alongside beloved themes from Star Wars, Star Trek, and Apollo 13, blending classical masterpieces with cinematic favourites. From the awe-inspiring opening of Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra to the sweeping drama of John Williams’ unforgettable film music, The Planets – Symphony in Space promises an immersive concert experience that will delight classical music lovers, film score fans, and curious explorers alike.
