Image by: Sean Fenzl For Commercial St., artist Samuel Roy-Bois has created a series of artworks that directly respond to the vibrant street where Nanaimo Art Gallery is located. Drawing inspiration from architecture and streetscape elements, large wooden sculptures echo Commercial Street’s built environment—the street’s layout, a vanished window, and a cairn that has recently been removed—as well as aspects of its social dynamics and commercial exchanges. Roy-Bois has collaborated with local artists and businesses to engage in what he calls a sculptural conversation—building community connections that transcend physical boundaries. Through these relationships, Roy-Bois brings new elements into play with his sculptural forms. These include a drinking glass borrowed from Mon Petit Choux cafe, a record chosen by the artist and one recommended by Steve Lebitsching from Fascinating Rhythm, antique and imported objects from Steven Johns of Red Shelf Decor, and a shirt bought, and one borrowed, from Rumours Vintage Collective. Commercial St also includes artistic contributions by Bronwyn Arundel from Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, graffiti artist Doktoer, and photographs by David Spearing courtesy of Nanaimo Archives. The exhibition is accompanied by new writing from Canadian poet, essayist, and novelist Lisa Robertson. The artworks and objects in this exhibition reflect the everchanging network of events, individuals, and materials present on Commercial Street, brought together through playful interactions, coalescing in sculptural form. This October, we have the privilege of presenting a wonderful women’s play for Yellow Point Drama Group at Cedar Community Hall. In fact, while it is a play about women, it’s not just for women; it’s for everyone who’s ever had a mother! On the morning after 18 year old Polly loses her virginity on a pew at the Congregational church, her two grandmothers, one an illiterate farmer from Saskatoon and the other a Jewish intellectual from Pennsylvania, draw upon their own life experiences to offer advice and direction to Polly and her mother Jessica who is mourning the very recent death of her lover. Filled with pathos, passion, regret, insight and humour, this play touches on every woman’s experiences and the choices we have all had to make. We know you will relate! We are pleased to offer a special group rate of $20 per person to your party of 10 or more. Our draft league in Nanaimo will usher you into a world of great dodgeball with the most widely used ruleset in BC. Come touch our premium balls that have hit, grazed, and deflected into every body part of a player's body since 2004. Bounce them. Hold 2. Hold 5! Catch 1! Catch 2! Pass them to a teammate! Season 10's draft league will expand on our growing dodgeball community with veteran players stepping up to captain the next wave of new players. Each season will have its own double-elimination playoffs as well as Legendary Pub Nights! Once registered, you'll be assessed (throw/catch in-game) on Exhibition Week so we can draft you onto a team that will thrive with your skillset (newbies are the best!). Reconciliation Theatre Society is excited to announce the Hallowe’en Spooktacular 2025 will be putting the Halloween spirit into fans of all things scary Wednesday, October 29th and Thursday, October 30th at The OV Arts Centre at 25 Victoria Road in Downtown Nanaimo. The third annual event offers visitors the chance to walk through and explore the haunted basement of the OV Theatre. As you make your way through scenes created by Reconciliation Theatre designers, the Cellar Dwellers scare team from RTS Youth Theatre will animate the spooky scenes to scare and delight you. After your walk-through, come and sit for a spell and take in a spine-tingling story from Never Whistle at Night: An Anthology of Indigenous Dark Fiction, Our talented storytellers share creepy and chilling tales from talented contemporary Indigenous writers in a haunting experience is open to all ages. (content warnings posted). Proceeds from this annual south-end tradition help Reconciliation Theatre Society raise the necessary funds to bring affordable youth theatre programming to the OV Arts Centre throughout the school year. RTS Youth Theatre, which meets on a drop-in basis every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, welcomes all kids aged 12 to 18 who wish to explore live theatre and improv with certified and experienced teachers. Reconciliation Theatre Society greatly appreciates the support of the City of Nanaimo and the BC Gaming Society. With their support, Reconciliation Theatre Society can continue to remove barriers to quality arts programming for Nanaimo families. The show is based on the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York City socialite and amateur singer who could not carry a tune but was convinced she was a great soprano. The pinnacle of her career was when, at the age of 76, she gave a legendary public performance in Carnegie Hall! In this touching play, also a movie with Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, what begins as a joke becomes a lesson in how to live your dream. The play is ultimately about love in its many forms. Peter Quilter's plays have been presented in major theatres in 50 countries around the world and translated into over 30 languages.

This show brings more than 50 artists together from Nanaimo and the mid-island, in a vibrant atmosphere and a professionally curated art show in Dodd Narrow's Hall at the Vancouver Island Conference Center in Nanaimo. Join us for an exciting concert at the Lighthouse Bistro and Pub. This is the 15th in a monthly series that was partially inspired by Brad Turner playing with us at the Lighthouse last September. The energy that Brad brought to the room and the success of the show gave us much needed momentum to start this series, and we are always honored to have him back. This time around we will play songs from the repertoire of the great Freddie Hubbard! Brad Turner Trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer Brad Turner is one of Canada’s most highly esteemed jazz musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Ingrid Jensen, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, PJ Perry, John Scofield, Lewis Nash, Reneé Rosnes, Peggy Lee, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Steve Davis, Peter Bernstein, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Scott Robinson. As a leader, Brad has released thirteen albums, ten as a trumpeter, and three as a pianist with his trio. Four of those releases were recognized with Juno Award nominations. Brad is a three time Juno Award winner, as co-leader of the electric jazz group Metalwood. Brad teaches as a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University in North Vancouver B.C. Joining Busheikin and Villette in the rhythm section are first call Island musicians Nick Peck and John Lee. All the musicians in this band have worked together over the years but this is the first time the 5 of them will play in one band. Through the Eyes of a Child is the theme for our concert on Nov. 29. At this concert, we will sing in recognition of World Children’s Day, UNICEF’s Global Day of Action for children which happens on November 20. This program highlights the gifts that children give us: gifts of humour, wonder, innocence, and simplicity. We will open with This Little Light of Mine, a traditional spiritual arranged by Moses Hogan, and follow that with The Gift to be Simple, a traditional Shaker tune arranged by Bob Chilcott. The gift of humour and wonder is celebrated in Kookoorookoo, words by Christina Rossetti set to music by Jon Washburn. Animal Crackers, the poetry of Ogden Nash arranged by Eric Whitacre, is full of surprises, chuckles and laugh out loud humor. Beautiful childish innocence is captured in Goodnight Moon, the words of a child’s book written by Margaret Wise-Brown set to music by Eric Whitacre. Teach Your Children by Graham Nash speaks to our role as adults to support and guide children as they grow up. I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack, arranged for us by Nanaimo musician Nico Rhodes, speaks to the importance of living life to the fullest. We Rise Again made famous by the Rankin Family, is an anthem of resilience and hope. Please plan to join us! There are many more beautiful pieces of music that we want to share with you. Drawing inspiration from architecture and streetscape elements, large wooden sculptures echo Commercial Street’s built environment—the street’s layout, a vanished window, and a cairn that has recently been removed—as well as aspects of its social dynamics and commercial exchanges. Roy-Bois has collaborated with local artists and businesses to engage in what he calls a sculptural conversation—building community connections that transcend physical boundaries. Through these relationships, Roy-Bois brings new elements into play with his sculptural forms. These include a drinking glass borrowed from Mon Petit Choux cafe, a record chosen by the artist and one recommended by Steve Lebitsching from Fascinating Rhythm, antique and imported objects from Steven Johns of Red Shelf Decor, and a shirt bought, and one borrowed, from Rumours Vintage Collective. Commercial St also includes artistic contributions by Bronwyn Arundel from Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, graffiti artist Doktoer, and photographs by David Spearing courtesy of Nanaimo Archives. The exhibition is accompanied by new writing from Canadian poet, essayist, and novelist Lisa Robertson. The artworks and objects in this exhibition reflect the everchanging network of events, individuals, and materials present on Commercial Street, brought together through playful interactions, coalescing in sculptural form. On the morning after 18 year old Polly loses her virginity on a pew at the Congregational church, her two grandmothers, one an illiterate farmer from Saskatoon and the other a Jewish intellectual from Pennsylvania, draw upon their own life experiences to offer advice and direction to Polly and her mother Jessica who is mourning the very recent death of her lover. Filled with pathos, passion, regret, insight and humour, this play touches on every woman’s experiences and the choices we have all had to make. We know you will relate! Whether it’s music from a spooky movie or musical, or music about dark rain clouds and storms, come prepared to be chilled, thrilled, and entertained. We might have a happy ending or two just to balance things out. This concert features guest artist, James Mark on violin who will join the band for Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre as well as Schindler’s List.

This October, we have the privilege of presenting a wonderful women’s play for Yellow Point Drama Group at Cedar Community Hall. In fact, while it is a play about women, it’s not just for women; it’s for everyone who’s ever had a mother! On the morning after 18 year old Polly loses her virginity on a pew at the Congregational church, her two grandmothers, one an illiterate farmer from Saskatoon and the other a Jewish intellectual from Pennsylvania, draw upon their own life experiences to offer advice and direction to Polly and her mother Jessica who is mourning the very recent death of her lover. Filled with pathos, passion, regret, insight and humour, this play touches on every woman’s experiences and the choices we have all had to make. We know you will relate! “IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT” Our fall concert is on the same weekend as Hallowe’en, so we couldn’t help but choose some music that’s dark and mysterious. Whether it’s music from a spooky movie or musical, or music about dark rain clouds and storms, come prepared to be chilled, thrilled, and entertained. We might have a happy ending or two just to balance things out. This concert features guest artist, James Mark on violin who will join the band for Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre as well as Schindler’s List.
