League Nanaimo

Nanaimo Art Gallery 150 Commercial Street, Nanaimo

League Nanaimo is a project led by Vancouver and Salt Spring Island based artist Germaine Koh that unites creative process and play. Community members of all ages are invited to gather and exercise creativity by developing new games and sports through iterative, embodied activities. Games evolve organically as they are played, and strategies emerge through trial and improvisation, and sometimes new tools are invented on the fly. Koh’s playful art installation turns Nanaimo Art Gallery into an experimental arena of sorts where visitors are welcome to jump, throw, dance, run, and touch; all actions that are usually frowned upon in art museums. In this space, that is a cross between a hockey rink, a dance hall, a tennis court, and an archery range, you are invited to interact with objects and markings, and with each other, and could find yourself developing your own games. The Gallery also serves as a hub for community outreach as the artist and Gallery facilitators bring League Nanaimo into the broader community. During the run of the exhibition, League activities not only take place in the gallery, but also at Nanaimo parks. Nanaimo Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 am - 5 pm and Sundays from 12 - 5 pm.

Nanaimo International Jazz Festival

Nanaimo International Jazz Festival

Celebrated as BC’s Best Live Event in 2023, Nanaimo’s 9th Annual International Jazz Festival expands their event to four weekends this year turning September into a month-long live musical feast for locals and visitors. International performing artist Holly Cole headlines in the Port Theatre September 13 with regional and touring acts performing in pubs, clubs, dining rooms, churches and at free open-air concerts in Maffeo Sutton Park. The annual Jazz Parade will also entertain along the Waterfront Walkway replicating a bit of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras spirit. Seventeen performances in September will honour the broadest jazz genre with acts like The New Groovement, a ten-piece Vancouver band with a big following across North America for its hip-hop styling and syncopated rhythms. Local Indigenous, emerging artist Keanu Ienco offers a vast stylistic contrast with his quartet proving why he’s so widely recognized and nominated for many awards. Marc Atkinson Trio, well-known to Islanders, will offer modern jazz sounds before Mambo Mardi Gras wraps up the weekend with their high-powered R & B leanings – all this from just from four of the nine acts that will grace the free open-air concert stage at Maffeo Sutton Park on September 13 & 14. Ticketed shows include ‘Stealing Dan’ at The Queen’s in an act applauded across North America for incredible accuracy depicting this crossover act with reviewers acclaiming, “they don’t pay tribute, they simply channel Steely Dan”. Following that, a ‘Drag Jazz Cabaret’ at the Nanaimo Bar stars Josh Holloway as ‘Celeste’, a first-ever for the Festival Society. Other performances include a ‘Jazz Jam’ at The Vault, a late show that’s now a tradition on its own. Three dinner shows are on the menu this year highlighting The Lighthouse on downtown Nanaimo’s waterfront and North Nanaimo’s Simonholt Restaurant -- quickly building a reputation for its “sometimes chill, sometimes bumpin’” Sunday evening shows. The Festival winds up with Arrowsmith Big Band in an epic closing act to 2025’s Festival. Free Open-Air concerts in Maffeo Sutton Park will run September 13 & 14 with food trucks and vendors. On Sunday, the Jazz Festival shares the park with the 2nd annual Family Fun Fest offering free activities, games, attractions, and community kiosks for families.

Holly Cole Live at the Port Theatre

Port Theatre Nanaimo

Nanaimo International Jazz Festival is proud to present Holly Cole’s Dark Moon Tour as our 2025 Fall Festival Headliner. Holly Cole is a renowned Canadian/International jazz singer who began her career in 1989 with the release of her 4-song EP ‘Christmas Blues’ under indie label Alert Music, followed by her debut album ‘Girl Talk’ in 1990. In 1992, she signed with Blue Note’s Manhattan imprint and released ‘Blame It on My Youth’ which achieved Platinum + sales in Canada, over 200,000 copies internationally, and based on the success of the single “Calling You”, a number 1 charted single and album in Japan. The next album based on her hit rendition of Johnny Nash’s, “I Can See Clearly Now” and its accompanying video cemented her success internationally setting up her following release, the critically acclaimed, Temptation, an album made up of material exclusively written by Tom Waits, one of Holly favourite songwriters. With 12 albums to her name, Cole has achieved multi-platinum sales and received numerous awards, including 2 Juno Awards (out of 8 nominations) and 2 Gemini Awards. She has also won 2 Japanese Grand Prix Gold Disc Awards and the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award from the Montreal Jazz Festival, joining the ranks of Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall and Etta James. In 2014, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University. In 2019, Holly Cole reunited the original Holly Cole Trio, with David Pitch on bass and Aaron Davis on piano, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. They performed at the cabaret Lion d'Or in Montreal, and these special shows were recorded and became the 2021 album ‘Montreal’. For Christmas 2022, Cole released a remastered compilation combining her holiday releases from 1989 and 2001, titled anew ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside and I Have the Christmas Blues’. ‘Dark Moon’ is available via Rumpus Room/Universal Music Canada. www.hollycole.com
