Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150th and Beyond

The City of Nanaimo invites you to join us for Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150 & Beyond, a winter artfestival that is a celebration of light, art, land, and community. Temporary art installations will illuminatepublic space, transforming a once familiar environment into something new, a place-making experiencethat ignites imagination, inspiring hope and excitement for the future of our community. The festival will open with an event on January 22, 2025, in Maffeo Sutton Park, with live performances,and involvement of local community groups to mark the date of the first Council meeting 150 years agofor the newly incorporated City of Nanaimo. Temporary art installations will be on display in identifiedpublic spaces, encouraging visitors to explore park and community spaces. Musicians and performerswill be engaged in performances over the course of the evening at locations corresponding withtemporary art installations. The central event space in a local waterfront park (Maffeo Sutton Park), willinclude interactive booths, food trucks, City of Nanaimo 150 merchandise, children’s activities, andadditional educational and promotional material. The HMCS Nanaimo plans to visit Nanaimo for severaldays at the beginning of the festival. Culture Staff and the Port of Nanaimo are working together toarrange berth for the vessel. The HMCS Nanaimo intends to offer focused outreach for visitors to viewthe vessel throughout the first weekend of the event.  Artists and cultural community partners will further be highlighted through various public engagementopportunities through the course of the festival, such as artist talks, tours, and educational workshopshosted within a variety of cultural spaces. Temporary public art projects will remain available for viewing until the festival closing event onFebruary 17th (Family Day). The final event will focus on engaging families and youth, withperformances by child-friendly acts and take place in one centralized location (Maffeo Sutton Park). PaperWorks: Printmakers of the Salish Sea

PaperWorks features an extensive array of works of seven printmakers who create using a range ofprintmaking methods in non-toxic print studios in communities of the Salish Sea. Hand-pulled orhand-burnished, each piece is an expression of the passion our members have for printmaking andthe environment.Printmakers Anne Jones, Dorothy Friesen, Kirsty Henderson, Leona Petrak, Leslie Mobbs, LouiseSlobodan and Nora Layard are offering an inspiring showcase of over 100 recent works influenced byour coastal environment, personal history, and a never ending curiosity. Their original artworkscover a wide array of styles; deeply personal expressions, emotive representational works, andwildly energetic abstracted pieces; Reduction and multi-plate Linocut prints, Drypoint engravings,Collagraphs, Monotypes and Monoprints. These printmakers work using traditional techniquesthough with freedom to bend ‘the rules’ but always use the least toxic techniques and material available. Prints range in size and price points, framed or unframed: also available are original one-of-a-kind cards and high quality art cards. Printmakers will be in the Gallery each day from 10am to 4pm and are happy to chat about the work, printmakingmethods and inspiration, answering questions. On some days, printmaking demos and other creativeactivity will also be part of the PaperWorks exhibition and sale.PaperWorks is the first group exhibition and art sale created solely by printmakers to be held at theLadysmith Gallery. Printmakers of the Salish Sea, a collective with a focus on less-toxic printmaking,was formed in 2021. There will be extended hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Thursday, November 28th. There will also be a meet and greet with the artists on the afternoon of November 22nd.

Saturday November 23rd - Friday December 13th Santa's coming to town! Join us for a festive food drive. Bring canned goods to donate and meet Santa on the Christmas Train behind the Station! On Friday, December 13th SVI Rail Link will drive their festive decorated rail car throughout downtown and will pick up all the donations between 12-1.

Island Bel Canto presents CELTIC AYRES in Nanaimo

Island Bel Canto present Celtic Ayres at St. Andrew’s United Church. Artistic Director, Fiona Blackburn, with collaborative pianist Stefanie Unger will bring you music from Scotland and Ireland, as well as Benjamin Britten’s beloved Ceremony of Carols (a 20th century reworking of medieval carols with harp). Also included will be music from the Irish phenomenon Riverdance. Guest harpist will be Josh Layne.
