Longwoodstock. What more can I say? This fun-filled, sun-baked weekend was one for the ages. Longwoodstock is the creation of Longwood Brewery, and combines two of the greatest things in the world: beer and music.
This was the Festival’s second year, and due to immense interest, had been extended this year to two nights instead of just one. The first night kicked off at The Queens and featured incredible local bands such as Dope Soda, Lovecoast and Jon Middleton.
As I approached the Longwood Brewery on Saturday, I knew the day was going to be great. The closer I got, the louder the music and the cheers of folks got. Entering into Longwoodstock was other-worldly. Almost everyone I came across was grinning ear to ear with a beer, or a cider in hand.
Although the festival grounds were quite small (Longwood Brewery’s back yard) there were tonnes of things to do. There were people playing beer pong, blowing bubbles, and playing an assortment of other lawn games. You could purchase swag from the performers and the brewery, as well as grab some grub from the food vendors that were serving up burgers, tacos and other festival fare.
Longwoodstock showcased an incredible selection of the best handcrafted beer you can find Vancouver Island. Beers like Island Time Lager, Steam Punk Ale and my personal favourite, the Berried Alive Raspberry Ale. Longwoodstockers we’re also treated to Merridale Cider from nearby Cobble Hill B.C. Since the festival was so intimate, people were able to meet the brewers, talk beer and shake the hands of the fine folks crafting their adult beverages.
But Longwoodstock isn’t just about beer, folks were there to hear some great music, as well. The Longwoodstock main stage on Saturday featured amazing artists to keep the masses entertained all Saturday afternoon. There were performances by Vancouver’s Daniel Wesley, WiL, Northcote, The Leg Up Program, DJ Allgood and the Turntemple, Nat and Dave and the Grinning Barretts. As soon as the music started, the dancing began, and continued deep into the night at three Longwoodstock after parties at the Longwood Brewpub, Koncept Nightclub and The Queens in Nanaimo
Longwoodstock was an incredible, laid back, intimate back-yard party. Vancouver Islanders really know how to hang out, brew up a good beer, and keep the good times rolling. See ya next year!
