Hi all! I’m Eileen. My sister Helga works at the Visitor Centre and asked me if I would blog about vegan restaurants in Nanaimo.

If you are vegan or vegetarian and you are traveling or living in Nanaimo, I can assure you, that you won’t have to go hungry! There are some great places that you can visit and where you can enjoy a delicious meal, while being in a lovely and welcoming environment. Here are 3 of my favourites:


You will find Gabriel’s Cafe right in the heart of downtown Nanaimo. A cute spot with views of Commercial Street, Gabriel’s offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day until 7pm. If you feel like starting your day with a tasty Tofu scramble or are graving a wrap, filled with tons of vegetables, hummus and quinoa, than this is the place to go. Taken from their website: “WHENEVER POSSIBLE WE SOURCE OUR INGREDIENTS DIRECT FROM THE FARMER. WE HAVE BUILT UP SEVERAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL, SMALL-SCALE, FAMILY FARMS TO BRING YOU FRESH, SEASONAL VEGETABLES, FREE RANGE EGGS, AND PASTURE FED, ETHICALLY RAISED MEATS.”

Also downtown (and also delicious!) you’ll find Power House Living Foods. If you had a long day of exploring  you will feel refreshed and delighted after having some food or shakes from this unique restaurant. Using local and organic ingredients and preparing their food with lots of love, this place will make every vegan or vegetarians heart beat faster. Tons of options for your lifestyle – including gluten-free! This raw restaurant is definitely one worth checking out.

 


 

Last but not least, the Thirsty Camel Cafe. It’s been voted the best Vegetarian Restaurant in the Nanaimo Bulletin “Best of the City” Awards 5 times since 2009.

They offer a large selection of pitas, soups, dips and salads and you also have the option of gluten-free food for a lot of their dishes. All their food is prepared in house, made fresh, and from scratch. Don’t miss out on the opportunity of experiencing a true middle eastern vegan meal.

I hope you enjoy these vegan options as much as I do! For all the vegans with a sweet tooth or people who want to experiment in the kitchen a little, this is the recipe for you. These lemon bars with coconut are absolutely fabulous and super easy to make!


 

Base:

3/4 cups oats (or buckwheat if you want it gluten-free)
3/4 cups dates
3/4 cup shredded coconut (unsweetened)

Directions:

Pulse the oats and coconut shreds in your food processor until they become a rough flour. Add the dates and process until it all sticks together. Press into the bottom of a square baking pan and put in the fridge.

Lemon Layer:

1/3 cup melted coconut oil
1/4 cup maple syrup
juice from 3 lemons
1/2 cup shredded coconut (unsweetened)
1 or 2 bananas

Directions:

Blend all the ingredients until smooth. See if you like the taste and adjust accordingly. Spread evenly on the base layer and set in the fridge overnight.
(If you’re like me and you can’t wait a whole day for them to be in the fridge, than a few hours are totally fine as well!)
