My name is Emily, and I am Tourism Nanaimo’s newest team member! So far this summer has been full adventures, one being an observer of my boyfriend Chris, and his best friend Quinlyn who recently went skydiving.
Unfortunately I am way to much of a scaredy-cat myself to jump out of a plane, however if this is the type of thing that you would like to experience, Skydive Vancouver Island is the place to do it.
Skydive Vancouver Island is the newest jump site on the island, only 30 minutes out of Nanaimo, in Qualicum Beach beside the airport. We arrived at their office, which was practically on the tarmac, and were given a huge, happy welcome from the co-owners Gord and Dennis. While the boys were filling out their safety wavers, I started chatting with Gord about the business. Between the two of them, Gord and Dennis have approximately 4000 skydives under their belts, so it was safe to say the boys were in good hands, not to mention they were just as excited to jump as the two boys were. Once the boys were all set in their harnesses, they hopped on the plane. It took about 20 or so minutes to reach altitude (10,000 ft!) but the views on the way up were worth it.
Both Gord and Dennis have skydived in many different places, and say that their jump site has one of the best views in North America. On a clear day (unfortunately we went when it was still quite smoky from the forest fires) you can see views such as Mt. Arrowsmith, Mt. Baker, and the amazing coastlines that Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast have to offer. In North America, the law is that the jump site has to be 1km from the water, and Skydive Vancouver Island is 1.5km, which makes it one of the closet jump sites to the water in all of North America!
Everyone at Skydive Vancouver Island was so friendly and they expressed a nice calm over everyone, which was very reassuring. It was definitely obvious that this was going to be one of the best experiences for Chris and Quinlyn. They were also very accommodating for me as an observer, letting me know where to look for the plane as well as the boys once they had jumped. My favourite part is that they offer an additional video and picture package. They take their own Go Pro up and video tape you from the time you board the plane, to the time you reach the ground, and they also edit it for you making it the best keepsake.
After the guys had landed, I came to the sudden decision that one day I will jump out of a plane and I will most definitely do it with Skydive Vancouver Island because that is just how awesome they are! I have included Chris’s video of his jump so you can see how amazing it is.
