Nanaimo: Cultural Capital of Canada
The Cultural Capital of Canada program was created by the Government of Canada in 2002, and each year recognizes up to five communities for their excellence in supporting arts and culture. Winners must have demonstrated a solid commitment to promoting the arts in past years, as well as created a dynamic plan to host special projects during the year of the award. In addition to receiving the Cultural Capital of Canada designation, winners also receive grants which go towards artistic and cultural programs in the community.
The city of Nanaimo is proud to have received this honour, and to celebrate, will host a number of events throughout the year that highlight our cultural heritage and diversity. Events include musical performances, storytelling, new First Nations exhibits at the Nanaimo Museum, and Portals to Our Heritage, which are major works of art on display in locations that have great cultural significance to the Snuneymuxw First Nation tribe. There will be workshops and competitions for Nanaimo's youth, a drum festival featuring performers from all over the world, and the Street Theatre Festival, with live actors portraying some of Nanaimo's historical characters. If you would like to learn more about the various programs and festivities, visit the Living Our Culture website.
Nanaimo has a rich cultural history, and the special events for 2008 truly celebrate the diversity and beauty that is present here. With activities and displays that are fun and educational for the whole family, 2008 promises to be a banner year for the arts and culture community here in Nanaimo.
