Travel to Nanaimo by Ferry

Catching a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo is always a scenic and comfortable way to get to the city. The BC Ferries route from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay winds its way out past Newcastle Island and across the Strait, offering a spectacular view of mountainous Howe Sound on the mainland side. It's also the fastest sea link from Vancouver Island to downtown Vancouver. The Duke Point to Tsawwassen route circles Gabriola Island, and passes the Fraser River Delta, one of the largest estuaries in western North America. Both Nanaimo ferries have large multi-level vehicle decks with space for hundreds of cars, and large, comfortable passenger areas with restaurants, gift shops, play areas, and seating. And don't forget the expansive top decks, where there's room for everyone to sit in the sun and take in the beautiful coastal scenery. To save costs you can leave your car behind and ride the ferries as a foot passenger.
There is a BC Ferry route that leaves from Nanaimo Harbour to nearby Gabriola Island. This trip runs frequently throughout the day, and is a short, yet scenic ride. There are also smaller Nanaimo ferry boats that travel from downtown to Protection Island and Newcastle Island, allowing visitors and residents alike a convenient way to get out of the city. Simply click on the links to view the latest Protection Island ferry schedule, and Newcastle Island ferry information.
