Entertainment
Nanaimo entertainment venues provide a great setting for celebrations, relaxation, and an evening of fun. Dozens of lively nightspots and performance spaces throughout the city offer a good time whether you're here for a weekend party, or just checking out a band for the evening. Many live music acts perform at downtown Nanaimo bars in the Commercial Street/Victoria Crescent area, but there's always a hall show going on somewhere, and the courtyard between the Port Theatre and the library (aptly named Diana Krall Plaza) is often used for street performances. A good place to check for upcoming Nanaimo entertainment bills is on the community post above the China Steps, where Victoria Crescent, Albert Street, and Wallace Street meet.
Live Theatre in Nanaimo
The performing arts offer a rich source of cultural entertainment in Nanaimo. The Port Theatre is the largest venue, located across from the downtown waterfront, holding more than 250 performances a year, attracting over 100,000 fans of music, theatre, literature and dance. The Port Theatre is the perfect venue to relax and enjoy a variety of performances.
The city is renowned for turning out successful musicians who are products of the excellent Nanaimo School District jazz program and Vancouver Island University music program. International jazz greats Diana Krall and Ingrid Jensen are both former Nanaimo music students.
For more than 25 years Nanaimo's professional theatre company, TheatreOne, has been bringing high-calibre mainstage productions to the region, along with its popular family and children's entertainment series "Just Kidding."
The Nanaimo Theatre Group, an award-winning community-based company, has been entertaining Island audiences for more than 40 years with first-class productions from around the world, presented in the intimate setting of its own 172-seat theatre, the Bailey Studio.
